Summary of attribution report: Landscape With Rocks And Pool is one of Marsden Hartley’s later efforts, possibly created to pay a debt or to meet demand for his series of Dogtown paintings. It relates to some of his earlier works of New Mexico Recollections, in that it is an idealized view, rather than a direct reaction to his experience of the landscape and location. It also bears the influence of his later works in Maine, specifically renditions of the rocky coast of Vinalhaven which he produced in the late 1930’s. It also shows, in its clarity of color, the influence of Hartley’s paintings of Mount Katahdin in Maine. The size of the painting, the materials and the monogram signature are also in line with Hartley’s Maine paintings of 1938-1942.
